Seville is the capital and largest city of Andalusia, in southern Spain, with approximately 690,000 inhabitants and a metropolitan population of around 1.5 million. Situated on the Guadalquivir River, it hosts Spain’s only inland commercial port and serves as the political, administrative, cultural and economic centre of southern Spain.
The city’s origins date back to the Roman settlement of Hispalis. After the Visigothic period, it became the Islamic city of Ishbiliya (8th–13th centuries), flourishing as a major political and cultural centre. In 1248, Seville was incorporated into the Crown of Castile. Its river access later made it the main European gateway for trade with the Americas during the 16th century, bringing great prosperity and shaping much of its historic urban fabric.
Today, Seville preserves one of the largest historic centres in Europe, including UNESCO World Heritage landmarks such as the Cathedral, the Royal Alcázar, and the Archive of the Indies. Modern events such as the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 and Expo ’92 accelerated its urban modernization and international profile.
Economically, Seville combines a strong service sector—notably tourism, commerce, education and public administration—with a diversified industrial base. Key industrial activities include aerospace, automotive components, metallurgy, energy, and agri-food processing. The city has developed into one of Spain’s leading aerospace hubs, centred around the Airbus facilities at San Pablo, where military transport aircraft such as the A400M are assembled, supported by a network of high-technology suppliers and engineering companies. The presence of technology parks and research centres further strengthens innovation in advanced manufacturing and engineering.
With its strategic location, growing industrial capabilities, strong cultural identity and international attractiveness, Seville today combines historical heritage with the characteristics of a modern economic and industrial centre—although it also faces structural challenges typical of southern European metropolitan regions.
